The Duke Of Edinburgh Award
The Duke Of Edinburgh Award was founded by the Queen’s husband, Prince Prince Philip, in 1956 to encourage 14 to 24 years olds to challenge themselves, contribute to the country and society, and realize their self-value.
The award is not a competition, it’s about students’ self-discovery, self-challenge and self-improvement.
The Duke of Edinburgh Award encourages balanced development and non-competitive activities to inspire young people to know themselves, grow up and be independent and responsible.
For more than 60 years since its inception, the Duke of Edinburgh Award has been recognized all over the world.
Six million teenagers from 126 countries participated in the Duke Of Edinburgh Award. Many universities and employers around the world recognize and think highly of the award.
Young people who have won the Award, especially the Gold Award, will be given priority and stand out in university applications and future job applications.
Those who receive this award are considered to have the potential to serve the community, taking responsibility and willingly to challenge themselves.
The Duke of Edinburgh Award has three levels:
- Bronze Award (must be at least 14 years old)
- Silver Award (must be at least 15 years old)
- Gold medal (must be at least 16 years old)
Participants are required to be over 14 years old and must not be more than 25 years old to complete the award.
The award requires participants to complete four parts, each part, with a minimum of one hour per week:
- 1. Voluntary Service (raise awareness of social service)
- Help individuals in need; volunteers in hospitals, orphanages or nursing homes; community education services; environmental protection services; other types of services
- 2. Physical Recreation (encourage participation in physical exercise to improve health)
- Aerobics, dance, fitness, rock climbing, archery, roller skating, badminton, rugby, basketball, football, hiking (cross-country), bowling, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, rattan ball, etc. You can choose any sport.
- 3. Skill Development (encourage the development of personal skills and interests)
- Amateur radio, furniture restoration, plant weaving, jewelry, ceremonial gun exercises, knitting, chorus, language, classical guitar, floral calligraphy and calligraphy, clay modeling and sculpture, computer programming or typing, monetary. cooking, painting and design, magazine making, fabric stitching, photography, etc.
- 4. Adventurous Journey (encourage the spirit of exploration)
- Organize a team to explore outdoors, a two-day and one-night expedition, at least 12 hours outdoors, including one night in a wild tent
For Duke of Edinburgh Award participants, it is a great honor to win a medal. Winners will be recognized and stand out in applying for admission and scholarships to top universities all around the world.
